There are 5 Defense Types of in Tales of the Rays. These types include varying degrees of Physical and Arte damage reduction. Physical Defense & Arte Defense are automatically calculated for each character.

Defense

Status Change

Status Changes can affect both characters and enemies defense alike. Negative Status Changes can be removed with artes.

Guard

To perform a guard, a character must be standing still. During this period, the character will then take reduced damage from an enemy while also taking no hitstun and gaining a certain amount of CC in the process.

Guarding can also be utilized as a method to protect the character from Status Ailments or Negative Status Changes from attacks.

Status Change

Status Changes can affect both characters and enemies guard alike. Negative Status Changes can be removed with artes.

Iron Stance

Strong enemies may possess an Iron Stance that prevents them from being staggered. It is depicted as a blue shield with hexagons connected together.

An Iron Stance can be broken after a set number of hits. The target will retain their Iron Stance until the amount of hits the shield can withstand is exceeded. Once an Iron Stance is depleted, it won't recover until it is broken. Once a character has broken an Iron Stance, chain attacks together to prevent the enemy from recovering. Once an enemy has recovered from being staggered, their Iron Stance will regenerate completely.

Iron Stance for allies function different than with enemies. For allies it increases in specific amounts under a fixed time period.

Status Change

Iron Stance can be gained natively through enhancement, though there are also Status Changes that enable and enhance them as well. The opposite is true is also true. Below are effects that can directly affect Iron Stance.
